Boycotting Glenn Beck Sponsors For Calling Obama A Racist

with 80 comments

Update #9: Healthy Choice, Radio Shack, Roche, Sanofi-Aventis & Travelocity all pull ads from Glenn Beck Program.  More, more, more…how do you like it, how do you like it… [8/12/09]

Update #8: State Farm Insurance states says that ads should not have been run during the Glenn Beck Program.  They state that they have corrected the error and ads will no longer run during Beck.

Update #7: Men’s Wearhouse has stated that they will not be airing any ads during the Glenn Beck Program.  Full statement below. [8/11/09]

Update #6: Sargento Cheese also stated that they will be dropping Glenn Beck.  Full statement below. [8/11/09]

Update #5: GEICO announced today that they will be pulling their ads from the Glenn Beck Program on Fox News. [8/11/09]

Update #4: I know that there is a lot of effort to contact Glenn Beck’s wide array of sponsors and that’s good. I urge everyone to continue.  BUT, in order for this effort to work, it must be somewhat organized.  UPS is one of Glenn Beck’s largest, if not the largest, direct sponsors. Accordingly, UPS should be the primary focus of this campaign.  If you haven’t already contacted UPS, please do.  Start with them first, then contact the others.

Update #3: If you are looking for Glenn Beck sponsor/advertiser information, scroll down to the bottom of this post.

Update #2: It was recently announced that Procter & Gamble, Lawyers.com (owned by LexisNexis) and Progressive Insurance are distancing themselves from Glenn Beck. I will be posting my thoughts on this later as well. These actions are a useful first step, but they are by no means adequate.

Update #1: I received a response from UPS. See it below.

Beck doesn't want you to contact his sponsors. shhhh

Beck doesn't want you to contact his sponsors. shhhh

On July 2, I began a campaign of systematically contacting Glenn Beck’s sponsors after he expressed his hope for another terrorist attack against the United States in order to advance his political agenda.  You can read about those efforts here.  Although they were largely unsuccessful, I continued to organize on Twitter and research Beck’s sponsors.

Well, as expected, Beck continued spewing vitriol.  Most recently, he said that President Obama was a racist and that Obama has a “deep-seated hatred of white people.” [Video]

As expected, this has caused quite a stir.  It’s even breathed new life into the notion that Glenn Beck’s sponsors must answer for their financial support of Glen Beck’s outrageous and sometimes downright dangerous statements.  If you are interested, follow our organizing efforts on Twitter and feel free to check JenkinsEar.com for updates.

It is important that we organize and that we act systematically in order to have the largest impact.  Feel free to contact whatever sponsors you would like, but right now the primary focus should be on UPS.  If you ever watch the Glenn Beck program (and I do not suggest you do), you will hear several times: “The Glenn Beck show is brought to you by UPS.”  Well, isn’t that dandy.  Contact UPS and ask them why they continue to fund Glenn Beck’s vitriol.

UPS Contact Info:
Email: customer.service@ups.com
Twitter: @ThomasatUPS

Here is the text of the email that I sent to UPS:

On July 28, 2009, Fox News Channel host Glenn Beck called President Obama a racist and stated that “[Obama] has a deep-seated hatred of white people.”  Despite widespread public admonishment of these remarks, Mr. Beck continues to stand by his statements.  UPS is a Glenn Beck sponsor on Fox News and has thus far been silent on Beck’s remarks.  I just wanted to inform you that after these malicious statements, members of my family, friends and I will not use your services until you cease sponsoring Mr. Beck or take significant action to rebuke these remarks.

In case you are not aware, you can watch a video of Mr. Beck’s comments here [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI_0Kt_e3Go].

I recognize that as advertisers, you are not directly responsible for the statements made by hosts. I am also aware that given the diversity of opinions that exist on cable news, it is challenging to find a message that will satisfy all audiences. Certainly, some groups will always be upset by something that is said. However, this is not a simple political disagreement.  Mr. Beck is intentionally exploiting historical racial tension and ginning up additional racial tension for personal gain and to advance his political agenda.  Moreover, given the sensitive security situation associated with the first black president, it is especially pernicious for Mr. Beck to validate the positions held by some extreme groups and people.

Further, this is not the first time that Mr. Beck has made outlandish statements with little regard for their veracity or the consequences.  For example, in March, Mr. Beck suggested that Pres. Obama was constructing “concentration camps,” where he would send conservatives and political opponents.  Earlier this month, Mr. Beck agreed with a guest’s advocacy of the detonation of a major weapon in the United States as the only means available for implementing their shared political agenda.

Although you are not directly responsible for these remarks, you are indirectly responsible in that you provide the funding that supports Glenn Beck’s program. This is unacceptable. Something must be done to address these horrific remarks and until something is done, your company will lose out on my business. Further, I will continue to spread the word that you are paying money to a news network that allows its hosts to stoke racial tensions for personal and political gain.

Best Regards

I will update this post as additional information becomes available.

UPS sent the following reply:

Thank you for your e-mail regarding our recent advertising on Fox. We value your input and take your comments very seriously.

UPS is very sensitive to the type of television programming with which we associate our messaging. While our advertising schedules are purchased months in advance, we work with our agencies to monitor programming for offensive, inappropriate or controversial content as our schedules run. We do not, however, always have complete visibility into which programs will be promoted in purchased shows.

Occasionally, our advertising ends up near polarizing content. If we find that this becomes a consistent pattern, we will re-evaluate our commitment to particular programs or networks.

This is pretty much the standard response that I expected, although unlike other sponsors I have contacted, UPS provided for the possibility that they will drop Glenn Beck if enough people complain over a period of time.  In other words, if we continue apply pressure to UPS, then they will inevitably drop him.  So lets…

Sargento Cheese confirms that they will be pulling their ads from the Glenn Beck Program. Here’s their response email (much appreciation to Wrotte from Twitter for passing along this info):

We deeply appreciate your reaching out to us and sharing your comments and concerns about Sargento ads appearing during “The Glenn Beck Show.” We sat down with the marketing department to talk about it and I learned that we buy time periods not specific programs. But in any event, they’ve made the decision to exclude that program from our future ad rotation. Simply stated, Sargento ads won’t be airing during that show. Again, thanks for contacting us.

Received the following email from Men’s Wearhouse stating that they will be pulling their ads from Glenn Beck:

Thank you for contacting Men’s Wearhouse and bringing to our attention your concerns with the Glenn Beck program on Fox News. While we support free speech and do not make advertising decisions based on our own personal ideologies, after reviewing his recent incendiary comments we have decided to remove our advertising from his program. We hope that this decision will allow you to continue to patronize Men’s Wearhouse. I would encourage you to please share our decision with anyone else who may have expressed a similar concern.

Thank you again for contact Men’s Wearhouse.

  3. Glenn Beck must not be allowed to spew his racist vitriol under the guise of news. He must be fired. We, as a nation, must reject his abject hatred and utter contempt for those Americans of this nation who are not white. He adds nothing to dialogue and does, in fact, appear to be mentally ill. Please help put an end to this virus plaguing our nation.

    • OBAMA: “We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives we’ve set. We’ve got to have a civilian national security…

Me: Any fairly intelligence human being can follow Obama’s thought in the quote. No, it isn’t the KGB or the Schutzstaffel. We already have the FBI. Might Obama be talking about our first responders or even a Peace Corp type force? Is Beck damning our men in blue and the like? Evil Army?

If the President offered everyone free cherry ice cream, Then Glenn Beck would be right there saying see it is red. Saying I told you he was socialist. This is the level of social discourse that Glenn Beck has reduces his viewers.

Glenn Beck: Why do we need a civilian national security force that is “just as strong, just as powerful” as the military?

Me: We need one because the military marching in the streets is fascism. Civilian national security force (i.e., local militia, called police , Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) monitoring of terrorists is reasonable aim. It is more reasonable than fomenting war across the globe rather while not protecting within our borders. This is actually the second Amendment meaning. Glenn Beck, are you against the second amendment of the constitution? I know twelfth grade was hard to get through, but American History was included. I wonder what a well-regulated militia might look like? Not the vigilantes on the border, for sure.

Glenn Beck: Here’s why I ask this question: Who [sic] are we fighting? Who internally is threatening our security?

Me: Well, the last I heard we were at war with terrorist and supporters of terrorists. I guess you might fit into one of those categories. So maybe you do have reason to fear. Glenn Beck the liberals are not responding to you for the same reason you don’t argue with a drunk. Drunks pose no rational argument to fight and do not respond to what you say in a rational manner either. I have read three sentences and, you sir; have made no sense, common, or otherwise, in what you say. You are clearly more comfortable putting up straw men to argue with rather than actually debating with someone armed with facts. You appeal to belief, authority, fear, emotion, flattery, popularity and common practice. These are fallacies all. You have not demonstrated even the most basic understanding of a well-formed syllogism. In short, you are illogical.

Glenn Beck: It’s clearly not because we feel there is a threat from illegal aliens crossing the border, because anyone who would say that has been deemed a racist.

Me: First off, the Hispanics crossing the border come from a different culture, not a different race. Unless you want to classify Italian-Americans and Greek-Americans a different race as well. Such misinformation shows a lack of education, if not that, then blatant racism on its face. And who are these people that call criticizers of crossing the border racist? I have seen more Right wing bloggers suggesting wanting immigration reform suggesting they are being called racist than anyone actually doing the calling. I have heard those that object to the legislation suggest that the immigration legislation had a racist agenda. That means it is more fear based, than fact based and setting up another enclave of institutional ethnocentrism feeding the world opinion that we remain ugly Americans.

The Hispanics I know are a pretty conservative Christian group. They don’t want their jobs undercut anymore than anyone else. They, are I predict, in fact, going to be the future of a more rational Republican Party. Yes, they have sympathy for the oppressed, and yes they will defend themselves against wild-eyed slurs, but no they are not crying racism anymore than I believe you intentionally advocating for it. Border crossings make their communities much less safe than it makes yours. The truth hidden in this last sentence is the heart of the issue. Why is their any their community at all?

Glenn Beck: It can’t be a civilian national security force against Islamic extremists, because according to this administration we aren’t even at war against Islamic extremists anymore.

Me: The last I heard we had a war going on two fronts, at least. If it is not the terrorists we are fighting, then we are spending a lot of money for nothing. So we need all our troops called home now. Is that what you believe? If so, then I know a great way to fund health care reform.

Obama: “Let me say this as clearly as I can: the United States is not and will never be at war and with Islam,”

Me: That is pretty clear. We are not at war with a religion.

Obama: “In fact, our partnership with the Muslim world is critical in rolling back a fringe ideology that people of all faiths reject.” … Mr. Obama continued by adding that the U.S. relationship will not only be “based on opposition to terrorism.”

Me: Sounds to me that we are at war with ALL terrorists.

Beck: Is this administration really going to ask the American people to profile and call-in tips on Muslim Americans who act suspiciously?

I think that skinheads with guns might be more to the point.

      • National civilian force under who’s control? Not the President’s. I think the fifty state national guards under the control of fifty state governors is adequate. Also, is this force to be politically neutral? Or, are they going to support the President’s political campaigns, conduct the census, pressure companies to drop sponsoring commentators who disagree with the President’s policies, and maybe manage some nationalized banks, nationalized automobile companies and nationalized hospitals? Oh yes, I almost forgot maybe they can run the doctor’s and nurse’s unions the President plans to mandate. At any rate, I am sure “Humpty Dumpty and all the King’s men” will find a way to rationalize the need for this wonderfully innovative and vital left wing civilian thug force. I recommend we name them “the Chicago Several Million”.

        August 30, 2009 at 1:29 pm

      • dale west, that rant had no logic at all to it, are you in the habit of just quoting part of a person’s statement? And the Laws of this country prohibit the use of American soldiers here to enforce civil laws. Now if we were to be invaded by a foreign country then the US Military can be used. The fear of forming a civilian national security force would be to protect the socialist overtaking of the country from the American people who are berginning to show some possibility of opposition against the Obama administration, they just want another army to protect their socialist movements of this government and protect it from being stopped by the American people sho want no part of a government like this man is trying to push us into. And you mention the helathcare thing we NEED to pay for, that is what the American do NOT want!

Look at the regular people at the townhall meetings, and I don’t mean the thugs from ACORN or SEIU, now they are trying to recuit on Craigslist for people to champion the government’s healthcare program. 40. Beck calls Obama a racist. The pot call the kettle black. Beck is just spilling hatred. He is a spoil bigot. Anyone can look at him for one minute and see that Glen Beck is jealous of Obama and any successful person that is not White. He feels that only white people should have a say in this world. I think he needs to look at his history. The accomplishment of dark skin people has made it possible for him to have the comforts and joys of life that he enjoys. All races have contributed to the successes that we have today and in the future. When we work together we accomplish great things. I know Beck knows this. He is a smart man. Glen, it is ok to have someone that does not look like you have positions of power. Yes, there is a chance that people that don’t look like you will make mistakes. In spite of you, yes we will, still pick each other back up and work toward a better dream. People that look like you have made terrible mistakes in the past and will in the future. That’s ok with you when it is white people destroying our dreams of happiness, peace and wealth. At a time when we need to bring people together he is a component of hate and separation. History will view him and those like him as promoters of hate and evil. I will pray for his kids if he has any and his family.

    • Lou, wow “anyone can just look at Beck for a minute and see…” What an idiot statement made by an idiot. You are the racist, you can just look at someone and tell they are black and successful. Now I watch Glenn every day and I have never heard anything out of this man except that he is afraid for the country because Obama is a socialist, not a single thing about Obama being black. You are just like all the other liberals out there, have to make this a black thing, How about when people disliked Clinton, either of them, you couldn’t make this about them being black or about racism, must have broken you heart. So give us one, just one example of Obama trying to bring anyone together, hell tell us all anything that he has ever done that is great! This man is just trying to get people that work and earn to pay for the people that have no intention of doing for themselves, just like his dismantling the greatest health care system in the world, who will do all the expensive research and come up with the cures in this world, the people in Europe, the Muslim world, or in Africa?

  41. They left really did dumb down the population didn’t they. You people must have graduated from a clown college. You really do not have a clue. I support Beck and I did cancel all of my insurance with State Farm today. Some of the rest of you Beck supporters do likewise. This is no time to be lazy or cheap.

  43. We came across your blog and would like to share Kraft Foods’ position. Our goal is to give you, and all of our consumers, high-quality products and to market them responsibly and sensibly at all times.

We have a longstanding policy not to advertise on programs with extreme or inflammatory content on any network. In recent years, there has been a proliferation of shows with extreme content, including on the political front. These shows often are controversial and do not align with our company or brand values. We do not want to become associated with controversy simply because of the placement of a 30-second spot. That’s why we have made the decision to stop advertising on the more politically extreme programs, including The Glenn Beck Show, on all networks.

We’re sorry that you were disappointed and we hope you’ll be pleased with our future sponsorship choices.

    • Thank you for responding. Apparently you also have a long standing policy of permitting left wing loons to dictate how you run your business. I and my family will no longer purchase any products with Kraft Foods on them. We will pass the word about Kraft long and hard throughout our social networks. Glenn Beck has millions of loyal fans and unlike Kraft Foods & “Left Wing Loons” he believes in freedom of speech. I do not think you realize the damage you are doing or how much this will cost you.

I do have one question, do you kiss your Momma with that mouth, “you’re a fucking whackjob either way”? And who said we didn’t question when Bush or anyone else said things that went against the Constitution of this country? You make some assumptions about people whom you know nothing about, and then that mouth of your’s is something that can only be used long distance where nobody knows you, and not face to face. So what is your choice, LOVE AMERICA OR LEAVE? You sir are the “wackjob”!

  46. It is amazing how a lot of people can’t see a racist. We as black people have looked in the face of racist our entire life. For the first time in this countries history you are forced to look in the mirror and don’t like what you see. Yes, I can be a racist but in no way shape or form I am. I have white people in my family that I love and will die for. Maybe you feel like Glen Beck. That Barak has a hate for white people ‘That is Racist’. Dummy!! Most of the people he surrounded himself with are ‘WHITE’. If you have never heard anything that Beck said an don’t want to admit it was racist then you are in denial. I can admit when someone that is Black or White is taking or making racist actions. You are one of those people that feel White people can’t be wrong or incorrect. Life has a way of making people see themselves for what they are. I’m sure you are one of those people that shout ‘White Power’ and I want my country back. Stupid, White people already have the power even with a Black president you still have the power. You better realize how Black people have always been supported of the Whites. Even in slavery. You have a new group that is about to take over and you are so busy watching blacks that they will take it right from under your knows. They feel you stole the country from them and they want it back. Take your Black shades off and open your eyes. You will see we as a country we have a lot to lose or we will go just like the Mayans did. Just let us fight and destroy each other and they will walk in and pick up the pieces of a broken economy and spirit.

    • The comment from Lou was for Richard. Have you ever look at the statistics that show where we stand in health care? Have you ever listened to where the money will come for to pay for it? It is interesting how you used Africa as one of the places to compare health care. Obama has demonstrated several times where he is trying to bring all of us together. All of the questions you asked have been answered but you have blinders on and ear muffs on. How can a Black Man do anything positive you are saying. Any time someone states why are you making this a race thing it is a race thing. The above statement was for you and this goes with it. Have any of you realized that this country is in trouble. Mostly from the lack of Leadership by the right the last eight years. No, you will just blame it on Clinton. You are a small group of fools because Obama could have never became President without a large group of Whites that supported him. That makes your blood boil don’t it. I must be honest. I do feel some of the complaints about where our country is going by Republicans is warranted. But, when people like you don’t see the racist ties to some of the chatter I know why. This is not a Black or White problem. I probably make a lot more money than you do. I probably make more money than all of you that made comments put together. If you knew me you probably would be shocks. But that is another successful Black man that all of you HATE. I feel honored to help out the less fortunate. I do contribute tremendously to charities and I volunteer my time to several communities groups and schools. I do my part to help others. I see all you do is sit back and spit HATE.

      • Lou since you addressed your race hate rant and me I will answer it for you. First I don’t care how much money you make, nor do I care what kind of job you have. I can say you don’t make you living with your command spelling or grammer. You have no idea who or what I am but you are making little ass like statements as if you knew me. I have not ever made much money, I have spent my entire life in the military defending this nation you want to flush down the toilet. And I know your beloved leader has not spent a day or even an hour defending anything American. So you probably make much more money than I do, isn’t reverse descrimination great, you probably have that to thank for your great live. And men like me that have sweated, bled and died for freedom. I even have fought so sorry people like you can rant like you do. Now since I watch Beck every day, I for one can say this is not a white and black thing, when has Glenn Beck ever said anything against black people, just the socialist leading fool who is our current leader. Again I read my post you are ranting about, and DUH I didn’t see a thing about race in my post other than my stating you are the racist, and since you allow you are black, my statement goes double now. Lou, you are like I said earlier, an idiot! And I would have a hard time determining how many white people voted for Obama, but I will say I believe they were all young and foolish and liberals. Now tell me please, how many campaign promises has this guy kept, other than his promise to get us into a single payer system. Shhhhhh he didn’t say tat to too many people outside of the unions, but he did say it. And I am almost sure he did not promise to push us over the limit on the deficit, which he has and not Bush. I keep hearing liberals whinning about the trillions of dollars Bush increased the deficit, but you know it just went over a trillion dollars after Obama’s 787 billion dollar stimulis, but then I guess Bush did that. And if you open your ears the Obama administration just stated this health care crap will put us into a 9 plus trillion dollar deficit. Now I ain’t as well educated as you seem to be but I do know when the wool is being tried to be pulled over my eyes. Ok and since you had to point to Africa, what the hell has ever happened there that was good?
Mpw once again I did not make a racist statement, so point our to me anywhere on here I have been a racist?
Now critizing Obama isn’t a racist statement, it is an American statement, and since I have earned the right to make an American statement I will not let you or anyone else try to tell me to shut up.

    • Lou – You need help. This is not a black/white issue. This is a capitalist/socialist issue. By the way, is President Obama black? I do not think so. I have read he is 50% white, 38% Arab and 12% black although I really do not know. I do know I don’t like his policies and I don’t like where he is trying to take this country. Read a book titled “when a crocodile eats the sun” and see if anything sounds familiar to you. It is the story of what socialism did to Zimbabwe and it is available on Amazon.

  47. Richard!!! First, I want to apologize for calling names and getting ugly. There are members in my family that feel like you do also. The difference is they will admit there is also a racist and negative side to it also. You may not believe it and I can accept that but if you look at the rules that were set for being black in this country was 1%. That really might make all of us Black if you believe that the origin of life began in Africa the way scientist have stated. Capitalism, Communism or Socialisms is just a term that we say to try to put thing in a unrealistic term. A lot of people were murdered due to them being labeled by one of these terms. If you remove the humanity from it them it feels better when we put down or murder our fellow brothers. I do need help!!! Can you tell me why decent/caring people support big businesses that is taking everything from us. I work for a big company like Claire. My company is one of those that pulled their support from Mr. Beck. I thought that my company was wrong because the right of free speech until I read what some people were saying on this site and loss it. I’M SORRY about that and usually invite people to speak their difference of opinion. Also, Big Guy, think about this. If you did not know who Barak was and he was in a Black community what would he be considered. Also, if he was driving in an all white neighborhood and the police stopped him what would he be considered. Probably the ‘N’ word would come up in both areas. All, I’m saying Big Guy, is keep it real. When you push terms and percentages we have a tendency to block our view of reality. I listen to Right and Left wing talk radio and television programs. I always went by the rule that if it made me feel real good and I totally agreed with it then I must look deeper.
We both must agree that the media has pitted us against each other but we are both looking for similar goals. I want my pocket and spirit to grow and be happy. When we are divided we are easy pray. I went to Catholic schools growing up and there we three Black people in my Grade school and one of them was my brother. I have seen a lot of racism but I have also seen unconditional love for me from my white brothers and sisters. My high School was 90% white. Again, if all of us work together and I agree, remove the race from it we will move this country to a better place. Take Care, Lou

    • Lou – I don’t think you owe anyone an apology. People are afraid. I am afraid. We do not want to loose our individual liberty and we clearly see the far left trying to undermine the U.S. Constitution. They were voted in to represent “the People”. They appear to believe they were voted in to “Rule” the People. They are not “Rulers”. They do not “Rule” anyone. The Constitution clearly states “All Men Are Created Equal” and that is the way it will be in this country until the Socialists succeed in destroying the Constitution. As I said before this is not a black/white issue. It is not playing out on a personal level. It is far more important than that. And the only thing you and I have in common in it is will we both loose our individual liberty or will we both keep it. Believe me, it is not about ethnic heritage. You just do not realize it yet.

  48. Richard I truly feel you are right. What makes me think that it is about race is when I see what some of the people that call themselves Tea Baggers and Great Americans do. When they call Barak, his wife and kids names like. Monkey, Gorilla, Nazi and other derogatory names race comes to the front. Being a black person it rings loudly. When I hear group chant at rallies kill him and death to the ‘N’. I hear race. It appears that you are coming from a position where you can ignore this type of nonsense. It is hard for me and others to ignore this. The races are being pulled apart at a time when we need to unite more than ever. There are those in power positions that are orchestrating this. I feel we can work together. You are right, this is really not a Black/White or Left/Right thing. But there are groups and leaders that are taking this opportunity to make it that. I think we both need to be very careful of those that point us in directions of hate and fear. The old divide and conquer system is alive and well. You watch out for our liberties and I will work on keeping all of us together as Good, God Fearing people. I feel we both can do our part respectfully and help to bring about a better country. We can have our liberties but if hate is strong we will lose them in a ball of fire. Freedom and Liberty is nothing if it is not meant for all.Our elected officials have been been for big Business and not for the people for quite a number of years. Actually, Big business runs this country. They are part of the problem also. We have a lot of work in front of us.

  52. Just watched the interview with Katie Couric and Beck, so he is a reformed drug addict/alcoholic that has the direction of the rightous. Wonderful he got straight but people see through this man’s need to pump himself up. The guy’s mother commited suicide when he was still forming emotionally as a youngster hence his turn to his drug life. Now he needs another drug of people thinking he is a conservative God!!! The ego is a funny thing and people will pander to questionable acts to feed it. Don’t misunderstand Beck sounds like red, white and blue with a side of apple pie but someone might want to check him a little more deeply before they pick up this man’s philosophy as their own.
