Glenn Beck Was For The Bailout, Before He Was Against It

with 15 comments

Now, that Glenn Beck has a Fox News show he spends an awful lot of time railing against the Obama administration bailouts.  He’s so strongly opposed to government bailouts that one of the major underlying themes of the Glenn Beck 9/12 Project is staunch opposition to bailouts (past and potential future).

But, before Obama was elected POTUS and when Glenn Beck was on CNN, he was singing a very different tune.  One could say that Glenn Beck was for the bailouts before he was against them.  Not only was he for the bailout, but he argued that it wasn’t big enough!

On September 22, 2008, speaking about the bailouts Glenn Beck said:

The “REAL STORY” is the $700 billion that you`re hearing about now is not only, I believe, necessary, it is also not nearly enough, and all of the weasels in Washington know it.

You can do some searching and find Glenn Beck offering his support for the bailout program then, when the election was still in play and while Bush was still in office.

So what’s changed between now and then to justify Glenn Beck’s wild reversal of his original bailout advocacy? Well, Obama is the president and Glenn Beck is on Fox News.

  1. So: Would it be safe to say that Glenn Beck is guilty of doublethink?

  6. Just goes to show you that Beck, just like most of the rest of them, will say whatever it takes to make a paycheck. I wouldn’t doubt that Beck does not believe the better half of what he says. It’s a circus, and he is in the center ring.

  7. In September 2008, many people who were for the bailout did so on the limited information coming out about the financial collapse. Their minds were changed after they found out how the money was actually being spent. As more facts came out, opposition grew. And that occurred prior to Barack Obama becoming President.
As for the following; “So what’s changed between now and then to justify Glenn Beck’s wild reversal of his original bailout advocacy? Well, Obama is the president and Glenn Beck is on Fox News”, it can just as easily be said that because he was at CNN, he had to be for the bailout.

    • “In September 2008, many people who were for the bailout did so on the limited information coming out about the financial collapse”

That indicates that, at the very least, Beck jumped the gun. So why should we not assume that he is not doing it when he changes his mind?

What “facts”, incidentally came to light that absolves beck, but not Obama?

“it can just as easily be said that because he was at CNN, he had to be for the bailout.”

Well, duh! That is precisely what makes what Beck speaks to be nothing but mindless drivel!

  11. Thank you for providing the link to the full transcript of Beck’s comments. It allowed me to see his entire comments in full context and recognize how you falsely portrayed his position and simplified a complex and reasoned discussion into a carefully selected comment you could twist into the conclusion you craved. Rather than the “gotcha” that your headline and article suggest, you’re editing and characterization betrays both your ad hominem bias and your inability to understand a nuanced and hotly debated analysis by his panel of experts of a crisis moment in US economic history. Beck clearly articulated his normal oposition to such government involvement, along with his reasoned determination that this specific intervention was necessary at that moment.
